A 3 Day Road Trip

The end of the 2nd week in England and Megan & I set off for a 3 day road trip in her trusty (?) old car.....
....... after first competing with lots of traffic on the London Ring Road (M25)......
....we headed off onto more quieter roads and spent some time wandering around the village of Marlow...found a quaint bookshop!
A bit further on......Henley on Thames (known for its annual regattas).....followed by late afternoon refreshments alongside the river.....
Day 2 and we were off to Avebury - a UNESCO World Heritage site where the very small village is inside the centre of the world's largest and one of the oldest (2500 - 2000BC) stone circles (larger at 348 metres wide and older than Stonehenge) Only about 30 stones are still in place but small pillars show where missing stones should have been......

on the walk around the stones
....Autumn colours in Avebury and little cobbled laneway

Day 3..... more very narrow English roads and we came to Old Wardour Castle......
Built in the 1390s, partially destroyed during the Civil War in 1600s & never reconstructed with owners turning it into a"romantic ruin" and parkland.....
Onwards....to Chawton Village & the home (from 1809 - 1817 when she died) of novelist Jane Austen.....

Jane Austen's quilt made by Jane, her sister and mother......
and a sunny spot in the garden of her home....
then, time for a late afternoon tea before heading back to our"home"!
A great 3 days away....with many roads travelled - some of which "in-car"photos was all that could be taken - you didn't dare stop as there was no-where to stop!! ....
Once the GPS even took us through a military training ground - we didn't spot any tanks!
So now I am just over half way through my English holiday.......3rd week coming up next time....

Asta
